Kenseth content in car and not contemplating retirement (The Associated Press)

Matt Kenseth is just a year younger than Jeff Gordon, who has already said he'll retire at the end of this season. The 43-year-old former champion won't use Gordon's exit as a reason to consider his own future in NASCAR. He's got no plans to get out of the race car anytime soon and hopes his pole-winning run at Bristol Motor Speedway will lead to the end of a 51-race winless streak. I hope I'm fortunate enough to be one of those guys.'' Kenseth, a two-time Daytona 500 winner and the 2003 Cup champion, had a resurgence with his 2013 move to Joe Gibbs Racing. read more...

RCR takes Newman penalties to final appeals officer (The Associated Press)

Richard Childress Racing appealed NASCAR's penalties against Ryan Newman's team to the highest level on Friday, and crew chief Luke Lambert was eligible to return to work at Bristol Motor Speedway. RCR made the move a day after losing its bid to overturn penalties levied against Newman's team for allegedly manipulating tires at a race last month at California. Although a three-person appeals panel reduced some of the sanctions, the six-week suspensions for crew chief Luke Lambert and two other team members were upheld. RCR sent Todd Parrott to Bristol on Friday as interim crew chief for Newman, but the decision to take the case to Final Appeals Officer Bryan Moss means Lambert and the two suspended crew members can work this weekend. read more...

Matt Kenseth wins pole at Bristol Motor Speedway (The Associated Press)

Matt Kenseth will try for his first win since 2013 when he starts from the pole at Bristol Motor Speedway. Kenseth led a strong showing from Joe Gibbs Racing on Friday when he turned a lap at 128.632 mph to grab the top starting spot. Kenseth is winless in 51 races since New Hampshire in September 2013, but came close last month at California until a late debris caution ruined his day. ''The guy who's on the pole always says it's a big deal for Sunday. read more...

Ross Kenseth to make NASCAR debut with help from his dad (The Associated Press)

Ross Kenseth will make his national series debut at Chicagoland Speedway, where he will drive for the same team, same sponsor and with the same car number used by his championship-winning father at NASCAR's highest level. Kenseth will run the Xfinity Series race June 20 in Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 20 Toyota sponsored by Dollar General. His father, Matt Kenseth, drives the same combination in the Sprint Cup Series. Ross Kenseth, who turns 22 next month, has been actively trying to build a racing career but has struggled to find opportunities. read more...

Appeals panel rules RCR intentionally altered Newman's tires (The Associated Press)

The Duck Commander 500 will run on Saturday evening. (AP Photo/Larry Papke)A NASCAR appeals panel upheld a penalty against Richard Childress Racing for intentionally manipulating the tires on a car driven by Ryan Newman at Fontana. The three-panel National Motorsports Appeals Panel reduced the amount of points deducted from car owner Richard Childress and Newman from 75 to 50 on Thursday. The original $125,000 fine against crew chief Luke Lambert was cut to $75,000. RCR can appeal one more time, to Final Appeals Officer Bryan Moss, but Childress said Thursday night the team is still deciding whether to try again.
