Logano wins Martinsville pole; Elliott to start 27th (The Associated Press)

Sprint Cup driver Joey Logano, left, celebrates winning the pole for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Va., Friday, March 27, 2015. Rain delayed the practice and qualifying for Sunday's STP 500 Sprint Cup race. (AP Photo/Steve Helber)Daytona 500 champion Joey Logano won the pole for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway, and Chase Elliott earned the right to make his debut in the series by qualifying 27th. Logano turned a fast lap at 98.461 mph in the third round of qualifying, edging Ryan Newman (98.328), to win the 10th pole of his career and his second this season. ''You win anything at Martinsville, it's a big deal,'' Logano said, adding that having only run five laps to get through the first two rounds of qualifying gave him an advantage heading into the final round. Martin Truex Jr. (98.018), Jeff Gordon (97.613) and Jimmie Johnson (97.583) complete the top five.

NASCAR topic: Cheating with tire pressure, or just hot air? (The Associated Press)

Jeff Gordon talks to a member of his crew in the garage after practice at the Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Va., Friday, March 27, 2015. Rain delayed the practice and qualifying for Sunday's STP 500 Sprint Cup race. (AP Photo/Steve Helber)There's been lot of talk about tires in the NASCAR garage the past few weeks, or longer, and lots of theories about whether something shady is going on or if the chatter is just a bunch of hot air. After last two races, NASCAR confiscated tires from teams. It took tires from red-hot points leader Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano after the race at Phoenix two weeks ago, and declared them fine a few days later. It took tires from Harvick, Kurt Busch, Paul Menard and Ryan Newman last weekend at Fontana.

Joe Gibbs Racing President J.D. Gibbs is undergoing treatment for Joe Gibbs Racing President J.D. Gibbs is undergoing treatment for ''symptoms impacting areas of brain function,'' which likely stem from a head injury suffered earlier in life. JGR did not reveal a specific diagnosis in a statement Wednesday, but said Gibbs is undergoing treatment to manage symptoms that began with ''speech and processing issues.'' The 46-year-old is the oldest son of team owner Joe Gibbs, the Pro Football Hall of Fame who won three Super Bowls with Washington. ''All members of the NASCAR and France family extend our thoughts and prayers to J.D. Gibbs and his loved ones,'' NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France said in a statement. ''We've all watched J.D. grow up within our community, and he always has represented himself, his family, the entire Joe Gibbs Racing organization and NASCAR with the utmost professionalism, enthusiasm and energy.

COLUMN: NASCAR fans are buzzing over debris cautions (The Associated Press)

Kurt Busch waves during driver introductions for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race in Fontana, Calif., Sunday, March 22, 2015. (AP Photo/Alex Gallardo)There's no way to dance around the fact cautions for debris at Auto Club Speedway twice changed the outcome of the race. A race that at first should have been won by Matt Kenseth was derailed by a late debris caution. Then Kurt Busch was twice denied a trip to victory lane by yellow flags. So a day after Brad Keselowski's come-from-nowhere Sunday victory in California, NASCAR was again under attack for questionable officiating that altered the end of the race.

Brad Keselowski holds off Harvick late, wins at Fontana (The Associated Press)

(AP Photo/Alex Gallardo)While Kevin Harvick chased Kurt Busch down the stretch in a battle of the best cars in the Fontana field, Brad Keselowski was buried in 17th place - until the yellow flags started flying. A caution for debris allowed Keselowski to move up to sixth. When a second flag went up, he took four new tires while Harvick and Busch got only two. Keselowski roared past Busch on the final lap and held off the streaking Harvick to win at Fontana on Sunday, earning his first NASCAR victory of the season in a wild finish.
