Greg Ives to crew chief Earnhardt in 2015 (The Associated Press)

Driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. prepares to practice for the Brickyard 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup series auto race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Friday, July 25, 2014. (AP Photo/AJ Mast)Hendrick Motorsports didn't look far for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s next crew chief, choosing a candidate already quite familiar with the organization. Greg Ives, the race engineer for Jimmie Johnson's record run of five consecutive championships, will return to Hendrick next season as crew chief for NASCAR's most popular driver. Ives will replace Steve Letarte, who is stepping down at the end of the year for an analyst job with NBC Sports. ''Greg was our No. 1 choice,'' team owner Rick Hendrick said Wednesday.

Ives to benefit Earnhardt in more ways than one (NASCAR.com)

Through seven years and five championship runs, Greg Ives was the quiet man atop the No. 48 pit box. It was crew chief Chad Knaus who brought the steel, who could raise the tenor of his voice over the radio, who at times could even put the whip to his driver or pit crew. Then there was Ives, who as lead engineer helped shape the strategy that won all those titles, quiet and calculating and somewhat unknown even to Jimmie Johnson's most ardent fans. read more...

It's also the perfect opportunity for fans to walk for a great cause and take pictures on a NASCAR track -- for which we thank Pocono and NASCAR." Gustafson: Penalties for No. 11 team 'huge' (NASCAR.com)

Alan Gustafson says he doesn't know much about the penalties handed down Tuesday to the No. 11 team for Joe Gibbs Racing and driver Denny Hamlin, but he does know the severity of the penalties can't be overstated. "I don't know enough about what happened," Gustafson, crew chief for Brickyard 400 winner Jeff Gordon, said during a national teleconference on Wednesday. "As far as the severity of it, yeah, anytime you see those kinds of penalties, it's like, 'Wow, that's huge.' It gets your attention; Hamlin and his team were stripped of 75 driver and owner points, while crew chief Darian Grubb and car chief Wesley Sherrill were suspended for six races, for issues discovered in a post-race inspection of the car following Sunday's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. read more...

Mobil 1 Auto Tech: Sickler proving passion pays off (NASCAR.com)

Considering the path to his current career in motorsports, that person could have been talking about Jonathan Sickler.   For the last four years, Sickler has been an integral part of Rev Racing in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, where he serves as a finish fabricator and drives the team rig that hauls the Toyota race cars. All those miles on the road and hours in the garage could take a toll on a person, but not Sickler. "If you're passionate about what you do and enjoy it, it doesn't seem like work," Sickler said. read more...
