Stewart returning to competition after fatal crash (The Associated Press)

Driver Tony Stewart reacts during practice for the Brickyard 400 Sprint Cup series auto race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Saturday, July 26, 2014. (AP Photo/AJ Mast)Tony Stewart will return to Sprint Cup competition Sunday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway, ending a three-race hiatus taken after he struck and killed a fellow driver during a dirt-track race. The three-time NASCAR champion has not raced since his car hit Kevin Ward Jr. at an Aug. 9 sprint car event in upstate New York. Stewart pulled out of the NASCAR race at Watkins Glen the next morning, then skipped races at Michigan and Bristol Motor Speedway. Stewart-Haas Racing executive vice president Brett Frood has said the emphasis was on giving Stewart time needed to get him ''in a better place than he is.'' Stewart's only comment since the crash was a statement the day after the crash in which he said ''there aren't words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.'' Ward had climbed from his car after it had spun while racing for position with Stewart.

Georgia native Chase Elliott eyes Atlanta win (NASCAR.com)

Georgia native Chase Elliott eyes Atlanta winChase Elliott's young racing career has taken him across the country from the beaches of Daytona to the deserts of Phoenix and even over the border to Canada where he announced his presence to the NASCAR world as the then youngest victor of a national series event. Ironically, the 18-year-old wunderkind has never competed at Atlanta Motor Speedway, a track located 80 miles south of his hometown of Dawsonville, Georgia. "It's always exciting to race around home, and anytime you can do that it's definitely one of the places you want to shine," Elliott said.

Radio spat, slump come at bad time for Kyle Busch (NASCAR.com)

Radio spat, slump come at bad time for Kyle BuschCrew chief Dave Rogers said all the right things in the aftermath of Saturday night's spat with driver Kyle Busch, brushing off the incident at Bristol Motor Speedway as a result of a miscommunication between driver and crew chief. Rogers, for the record, is still listed as Busch's crew chief as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series prepares to head to Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend, so it would seem safe to assume that no major personnel changes have taken place. With only two races remaining before the start of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, a strained relationship between crew chief and driver doesn't make for a winning combination.

With progress in place, Danica aims for results (NASCAR.com)

With progress in place, Danica aims for resultsPatrick optimistic, believes team can string together top-15s For one of NASCAR's highest-profile drivers who is much more accustomed to making headlines and shining in the spotlight, Danica Patrick's sophomore year in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has been relatively quiet and workmanlike. Yet Patrick remains enthusiastic and optimistic -- partly because her Stewart-Haas Racing team has proven to be among the best in the garage and partly because she is absolutely certain her stock car education has greatly advanced.
