NASCAR briefly halts race after 15-car accident at Talladega (The Associated Press)

Trevor Bayne (6), Landon Cassill (40), Joey Logano (22), Danica Patrick (10) and others are involved in a multi-car crash during the Talladega 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Sunday, May 3, 2015, in Talladega, Ala. (AP Photo/Greg McWilliams)NASCAR was forced to briefly stop Sunday's race at Talladega Superspeedway to clean up after a 15-car accident. The accident occurred 47 laps into the race when Paul Menard attempted to pass Trevor Bayne on the outside of a three-wide pack of cars. Kurt Busch was following closely on Bayne's bumper, and the aerodynamics from Menard on the outside and Busch behind him caused Bayne's car to snap around. When you get too close to somebody, it can just pull you right around and it's as much as hitting somebody physically when you get down on their door that tight.'' The race was stopped for 11 minutes because of the accident, which also collected Daytona 500 winner Joey Logano, Kasey Kahne, Kyle Larson and Danica Patrick.

Ole Miss coach gets firsthand taste of Talladega speed (The Associated Press)

Honorary pace car driver and Mississippi head football coach Hugh Freeze gestures during introductions for the Talladega 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Sunday, May 3, 2015, in Talladega, Ala. (AP Photo/David Tulis)Hugh Freeze knows a little something about speed and about NASCAR. The Mississippi football coach uses NASCAR terms to describe the various tempos of his no-huddle offense. Freeze drove the pace car for Sunday's Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, where pal Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was among the drivers. He said he's been a NASCAR fan since the early 1990s, pulling for Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Now, he roots hardest for Stenhouse and Danica Patrick, Stenhouse's girlfriend.

Jeff Gordon leads Hendrick in pole-winning run at Talladega (The Associated Press)

Driver Jeff Gordon smiles during qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Saturday, May 2, 2015, in Talladega, Ala. Gordon, who is in his last season, qualified first for the pole. (AP Photo/Butch Dill)In this farewell season for Jeff Gordon, he continues to seize every moment both on and off the track. Gordon won the 80th pole of his career Saturday with a blistering lap around Talladega Superspeedway, where he's a six-time race winner. The four-time NASCAR champion will start first Sunday and have all three of his Hendrick Motorsports teammates surrounding him as he seeks his first win of the season. Gordon's lap of 194.793 mph was a hefty 0.28 seconds faster than teammate Kasey Kahne, who qualified second for a Hendrick Motorsports front row.

Joey Logano uses big block on last lap to win Xfinity race (The Associated Press)

Winner Joey Logano celebrates in Victory Lane after the NASCAR Xfinity Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Saturday, May 2, 2015, in Talladega, Ala. (AP Photo/David Tulis)Joey Logano picked up his third Xfinity Series win of the season by throwing a big block on the final lap at Talladega Superspeedway. Logano led a race-high 40 laps Saturday but had to withstand an intense final race to the checkered flag. The Team Penske driver was the leader on a restart with eight laps remaining, and defending race winner Elliott Sadler hooked to his bumper. Chris Buescher, his teammate at Roush Fenway Racing, was leading the outside line and mounting a challenge on Logano.

Roush Fenway's Stenhouse, Biffle lead practice sessions (The Associated Press)

Kevin Harvick, left, talks to a crew member during practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Friday, May 1, 2015, in Talladega, Ala. (AP Photo/David Tulis)The slumping Roush Fenway Racing organization got a slight boost Friday when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Greg Biffle paced the field in a pair of practice sessions at Talladega Superspeedway. Stenhouse turned in the fastest lap at 200.780 mph in the first session Friday, and Biffle topped the second at 197.859. ''We know it's a speedway and catching the right draft is what helps you propel up the board, but it's always nice to see,'' said Stenhouse, who celebrated a season-best finish of fourth three weeks ago at Bristol. Stenhouse, who followed his strong Bristol run with a 28th-place finish Sunday at Richmond, believes his No. 17 Ford is strong enough to contend for the win Sunday.

Patrick happy with Stewart-Haas but says "never say never" (The Associated Press)

Driver Danica Patrick shares a laugh as she talks to Clint Bowyer and Ryan Newman prior to the start of qualifying Friday, April 24, 2015, for Saturday's NASCAR Sprint Cup auto race at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Va. (AP Photo/Steve Helber)Danica Patrick wants to remain with Stewart-Haas Racing but understands that GoDaddy's upcoming departure as her primary sponsor has put her future with the team in doubt. GoDaddy will leave NASCAR at the end of the season and Patrick, who is in the final year of her contract with SHR, said the team and her management group are actively searching for a replacement. She has driven for SHR since 2012, when team co-owner Tony Stewart put her in a limited 10-race Sprint Cup Series schedule. You never say never, of course, but I am happy where I'm at right now.'' Patrick said she hasn't talked to Stewart about the situation yet, and teammate Kevin Harvick admitted the sponsorship search ''can be a little intimidating.'' Harvick felt that GoDaddy making its decision on Wednesday helps the search for a replacement.

Busch crew chief working through kidney stone complications (The Associated Press)

Crew chief Tony Gibson, center, supervises work in the garage for driver Kurt Busch during practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Friday, May 1, 2015, in Talladega, Ala. (AP Photo/David Tulis)Tony Gibson didn't get to celebrate his victory with Kurt Busch very much. Soreness from a passed kidney stone concerned him enough to visit a doctor just two days after their win at Richmond. Tests on Tuesday discovered the crew chief had never passed the kidney stone that sidelined Gibson during the April 19 race at Bristol. ''I thought I'd passed it, but I guess it was just pieces of it because they went back on Tuesday and did a scan and ran the dye through me to see what was up,'' said Gibson, who also had a kidney stone during the March race at Las Vegas.
