It is Kenseth's first pole of the season and 13th of his career. Brad Keselowski qualified second at 128.442. He was followed by Carl Edwards as JGR drivers took two of the top three spots, and three of the top five when Denny Hamlin qualified behind Kevin Harvick.

Kenseth will run the Xfinity Series race June 20 in Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 20 Toyota sponsored by Dollar General. His father, Matt Kenseth, drives the same combination in the Sprint Cup Series. Ross Kenseth, who turns 22 next month, has been actively trying to build a racing career but has struggled to find opportunities.

Appeals panel rules RCR intentionally altered Newman's tires (The Associated Press)

(AP Photo/Larry Papke)A NASCAR appeals panel upheld a penalty against Richard Childress Racing for intentionally manipulating the tires on a car driven by Ryan Newman at Fontana. The three-panel National Motorsports Appeals Panel reduced the amount of points deducted from car owner Richard Childress and Newman from 75 to 50 on Thursday. The original $125,000 fine against crew chief Luke Lambert was cut to $75,000. RCR can appeal one more time, to Final Appeals Officer Bryan Moss, but Childress said Thursday night the team is still deciding whether to try again.

Roughly two hours later, it was Busch who slammed into that wall in what he called ''a whale of a hit, the hardest I've ever had.'' The NASCAR driver broke his left foot and right leg in the Feb. 21 crash, which has sidelined him for an undetermined length of time. In his first news conference since the accident, Busch on Wednesday entered Joe Gibbs Racing on both feet.
