(AP Photo/Butch Dill)CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Rico Abreu, the reigning USAC national champion and winner of this year's Chili Bowl, was among the 12 drivers named to NASCAR's latest ''Next'' class on Tuesday.

Column: Earnhardt back in victory lane and happier than ever (The Associated Press)

Dale Earnhardt Jr., left, talks to Jimmie Johnson, right, in Victory Lane after winning the Talladega 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Sunday, May 3, 2015, in Talladega, Ala. (AP Photo/David Tulis)There was a nearly five-year period for Dale Earnhardt Jr. when being a famous race car driver wasn't all glitz and glamour. He was a non-factor on the race track, barely even contended at Daytona and Talladega, the two places he was supposed to be unbeatable, and he is the first to admit his confidence had crumbled. Rebuilding NASCAR's most popular driver was a lengthy process that took a firm commitment from Rick Hendrick and a ton of patience from Earnhardt's rabid fan base. So it was no surprise Sunday to see Earnhardt back in victory lane at Talladega Superspeedway, a track he at one time had conquered with the same ease as his father.

Edwards and Kenseth question lack of caution at end of race (The Associated Press)

Casey Mears (13) and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (17) crash on the final lap while Clint Bowyer (15) spins past them during the Talladega 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Sunday, May 3, 2015, in Talladega, Ala. (AP Photo/Butch Dill)Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth were both frustrated with the end of the Sprint Cup race Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway, where NASCAR's decision not to throw a caution allowed drivers to speed past Edwards' spinning car. NASCAR didn't call a caution, which Edwards said allowed other drivers to pass him at high speeds as his car was out of control. ''The biggest cause of injury is going to be one of us not checking up when there's a guy sideways,'' Edwards said.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. cruises to 1st Talladega win since 2004 (The Associated Press)

Dale Earnhardt Jr. celebrates in Victory Lane after winning the Talladega 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Sunday, May 3, 2015, in Talladega, Ala. (AP Photo/David Tulis)There's something about Talladega Superspeedway - its ardent Earnhardt fans, the success his family has had at the track - that makes Dale Earnhardt Jr. feel a responsibility to put on a show. ''Even if I wreck ... we're going to be racing for the lead or trying to anyways,'' Earnhardt said. It was Earnhardt's sixth victory at Talladega - but first since 2004 - and he choked back tears after he climbed from his No. 88 Chevrolet. The late Dale Earnhardt, a first ballot Hall of Fame inductee, won 10 times at the Alabama track.

Earnhardt crew chief stays put on injured daughter's orders (The Associated Press)

Crew members for Dale Earnhardt Jr. (88) celebrate their win in the Talladega 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Sunday, May 3, 2015, in Talladega, Ala. (AP Photo/David Tulis)Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s crew chief, Greg Ives, couldn't get clearance to head home after his daughter broke her arm. It was fine with his driver, but 8-year-old Payton Ives would have none of that. She had surgery Saturday night to repair a broken arm, leaving the proud dad marveling at her toughness even as he celebrated Earnhardt's victory Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway. This was the first Sprint Cup victory for Ives, who took over as crew chief this season.

Jeff Gordon's costly mistake helps ruin weekend at Talladega (The Associated Press)

Pole winner Jeff Gordon (24) leads during the first lap during the Talladega 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Talladega Superspeedway, Sunday, May 3, 2015, in Talladega, Ala. (AP Photo/David Tulis)Jeff Gordon's mistake on pit road helped sour a promising weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. Hendrick Motorsports had the strongest cars in the field, and it was clear Gordon was a contender for the win. Because this is his retirement tour, Gordon had even hung out with friends on Talladega's boulevard, a party spot he'd avoided for at least a decade. I definitely feel like we had the best race car.
