Column: NASCAR blew it on Indy rules package (The Associated Press)

Sprint Cup Series drivers Carl Edwards (19) and Joey Logano (22) lead the field into the first turn on the start of the NASCAR Brickyard 400 auto race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Sunday, July 26, 2015. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings)Run, NASCAR, don't walk, back to the drawing board to figure out how to liven up racing. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings)NASCAR's hottest driver kept his cool on Sunday. Kyle Busch outdueled Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick on each of the last three restarts, fended off a last-lap challenge from Logano and finally overcame Indianapolis' searing humidity to win his first Brickyard 400 after running four more laps than scheduled. The victory came one day after Busch was so dehydrated he struggled to stand when accepting the race trophy for his Xfinity Series win.

Gordon's final race at Brickyard a disaster after wreck (The Associated Press)

(AP Photo/Darron Cummings)Jeff Gordon slid into the No. 24 for the final time at Indy with a car more fit for a junkyard than the Brickyard. Gordon's career at the track spanned from first-to-almost worst as NASCAR's only five-time winner at the Brickyard limped to a 42nd-place finish on Sunday. It was the first stop of a farewell tour this week that had earmarked victory lane as the final destination.

Busch uses late pass to capture Indy's Xfinity race (The Associated Press)

Kyle Busch celebrates winning the NASCAR Xfinity Series auto race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Saturday, July 25, 2015. (AP Photo/AJ Mast)Kyle Busch spent the last 10 laps desperately chasing Ryan Blaney. As Blaney attempted to pass a slower car in the back straightaway Saturday on the final laps, Blaney's car wiggled, Busch ducked inside, raced past and held on to win the Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis for the second time in three years. The 0.421-second victory margin was the closest of the four races held on Indianapolis' historic 2.5- mile-oval.

(AP Photo/R Brent Smith)Kyle Busch has the kind of trophy collection most NASCAR drivers would envy: monsters, lobsters, even wine. Oh, how Busch wishes he could take the checkered flag just once in one of those races. ''I would love to be able to have those checked off the list and to not be looking for just one victory, but two or three at some of these places,'' Busch said Saturday.
