Tony Stewart skips 3rd race after Ward's death (The Associated Press)

FILE - In this July 12, 2013 file photo, NASCAR driver Tony Stewart speaks at a press conference prior to NASCAR practice at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H. Stewart is skipping a second straight Sprint Cup race, and it is not clear when the NASCAR star might return after he struck and killed a driver at a dirt-track race in New York last weekend. (AP Photo/Cheryl Senter, File)Tony Stewart will not race Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway, the third Sprint Cup race he's skipped since his car struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. during a sprint car race. Stewart's decision was announced Wednesday and Jeff Burton will once again replace him in the No. 14 Chevrolet. Burton also drove Stewart's car at Michigan last weekend. Stewart-Haas Racing is allowing Stewart to take the time he needs away from the track, and the team statement indicated the three-time NASCAR champion is taking it week-by-week.

Joe Gibbs: Tony Stewart is 'a racer's racer' (The Associated Press)

Stewart is skipping a second straight Sprint Cup race, and it is not clear when the NASCAR star might return after he struck and killed a driver at a dirt-track race in New York last weekend. (AP Photo/Cheryl Senter, File)Joe Gibbs is waiting for Tony Stewart to emerge from seclusion to reach out to his former driver. Stewart has been in isolation since his car struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. in an Aug. 8 sprint car race. We all know he's a racer's racer, and he's big for our sport.'' Stewart drove for Gibbs from 1997 through 2008, winning Cup titles in 2002 and 2005 driving for Joe Gibbs Racing. He left following the 2008 season when he was offered an ownership stake at Stewart-Haas Racing.

NASCAR Illustrated -- Ryan's Hope: Reed rolls on despite diabetes (NASCAR.com)

An initially devastating Type-1 Diabetes diagnosis came early in 2011 after Reed had done enough on the track to secure a developmental deal with Kyle Busch Motorsports. So Reed moved from California to North Carolina to advance a career teeming with promise at KBM. Upon his return to California just 10 days later, his father knew something was terribly wrong. The Internet first led him to the story of Charlie Kimball, an IndyCar driver who'd received the same diagnosis and still persevered with his racing career. read more...
