NASCAR driver Travis Kvapil uses a cell phone in the garage at Atlanta Motor Speedway Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, in Hampton, Ga. Kvapil's NASCAR Sprint Cup car was stolen early Friday, forcing him to withdraw from a race this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. (AP Photo/John Amis)Police say they have found the NASCAR race car stolen from a hotel parking lot near Atlanta Motor Speedway. NASCAR's Team XTREME says the car was found early Saturday northwest of Atlanta in Gwinnett County. Morrow police Detective Sgt. Larry Oglesby, leading the investigation in the Atlanta suburb, confirms to The Associated Press the car was recovered. The discovery comes too late to help the team, which was forced to withdraw from the weekend race at Atlanta.

Daytona winner Logano takes Atlanta pole; 13 cars shut out (The Associated Press)

NASCAR driver Trevor Bayne signs autographs before practicing for Sunday's NASCAR auto race Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, in Hampton, Ga. (AP Photo/John Amis)Joey Logano is on quite a roll, following up his victory in the Daytona 500 by taking the pole for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. NASCAR is on the defensive after 13 drivers - including four former champions - didn't even get on the track for qualifying Friday after failing to pass inspection. Four-time Cup winner Jeff Gordon, who is retiring at the end of the season, called the situation ''absolutely embarrassing.'' Logano led the final session of qualifying with a blistering speed of 194.683 mph, taking advantage of temperatures in the 40s as the sun set on the 1.54-mile trioval. He has never been a strong qualifier in Atlanta, but he's on quite a roll after his victory last weekend in the biggest race of the year.

Dude, where's my car: NASCAR machine stolen before race (The Associated Press)

FILE- In this April 6, 2014, file photo, Travis Kvapil walks the track before a rain delayed start for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas. Police say Travis Kvapil's NASCAR Sprint Cup car has been stolen ahead of a race this weekend near Atlanta. Morrow police Detective Sgt. Larry Oglesby says surveillance video shows the truck and trailer being driven out of the parking lot around 5:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2015. (AP Photo/Ralph Lauer, File)When Travis Kvapil got the call Friday, he figured someone on his race team was playing a joke. They're like, 'No, the car is gone.''' The No. 44 NASCAR Sprint Cup car owned by small-budget Team XTREME was stolen from a hotel parking lot near Atlanta Motor Speedway, police said, forcing Kvapil to withdraw from this weekend's race before he even got a chance to qualify. The $250,000 race car was still missing late in the afternoon, and police were hoping the public could assist in the search. The owner of one NASCAR sponsor offered a pit pass to every race the rest of the year to anyone who helped located the high-powered Chevrolet.

NASCAR back on track for extra day of testing in Atlanta (The Associated Press)

Ebenhack)The Sprint Cup drivers returned to the track Thursday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, getting an extra day to test out the new rules package that will be in effect for the first time. ''This really feels like the start of the season,'' said Kyle Larson, who ranked second behind Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Jamie McMurray during the first practice session on a cool, windy day at the 1.54-mile trioval. The Daytona 500 is in a class of its own, the biggest event of the year coming right at the start of the schedule. Also, since the races at Daytona and Talladega are run with a special restrictor-plate package that was largely unchanged from 2014, this will be the first event with the new rules.

(AP Photo/Chuck Burton)Regan Smith was quick to accept an offer to race in the Daytona 500 as Kurt Busch's replacement driver. ''I've asked her to keep her legs crossed as long as she can if she does go into labor,'' Smith joked at Daytona International Speedway last weekend. Everything worked out just fine for the Smiths, who welcomed son Rhett Lee on Wednesday, an off day for NASCAR drivers. The baby had a short window to arrive: Smith gets back on track Thursday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where he'll drive Busch's car for Stewart-Haas Racing in an open NASCAR test.

Busch crash leading to additional SAFER barriers at tracks (The Associated Press)

Tires are stacked in front of the inside retaining wall at Daytona International Speedway before the Daytona 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup series auto race in Daytona Beach, Fla., Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015. Kyle Busch was injured in a crash Saturday in the same area. The track added the tires and plan to install a SAFER barrier system in the future. (AP Photo/David Graham)International Speedway Corp. is developing a plan for the installation of additional SAFER barriers at Daytona and Talladega, and will review the safety standards at its other racetracks. The renewed focus announced Tuesday by ISC President John Saunders comes three days after NASCAR star Kyle Busch broke his right leg and left foot in a crash into a concrete wall at Daytona International Speedway. Busch was injured Saturday in the season-opening Xfinity Series race when his car hit an interior wall that did not have a Steel and Foam Energy Reduction barrier. After his accident, Daytona president Joie Chitwood III vowed to cover every inch of the speedway with SAFER barriers.
