Stewart will return to Sprint Cup competition Sunday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway, ending a three-race hiatus taken after he struck and killed a fellow driver during a dirt-track race. (AP Photo/Ralph Lauer, File)Speaking quietly and with a trembling voice, NASCAR superstar Tony Stewart said Friday that the death of Kevin Ward Jr. will ''affect my life forever'' as he returned to the track for the first time since his car struck and killed the fellow driver during a sprint-car race in New York three weeks ago. ''I've taken the last couple of weeks off out of respect for Kevin and his family and also to cope with the accident in my own way,'' Stewart said.

In quotes: Drivers comment on Tony StewartThe NASCAR community welcomed Tony Stewart back to the Sprint Cup Series garage Friday in preparation for his first on-track competition in three weeks. Stewart, a three-time champion of NASCAR's top series, sat out the past three races as he mourned the death of 20-year-old driver Kevin Ward Jr., who was struck by Stewart's sprint car during an Aug. 9 sprint-car event in Canandaigua, New York.

Harvick: 'I'm just happy to have my friend back'Stewart-Haas Racing drivers react to Tony Stewart's return While some of the focus surrounding the three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion will be how he handles once again sitting in the cockpit of the No. 14 Chevrolet for the first time since a 36th-place finish at Pocono Raceway on Aug. 3, his SHR stablemates are more focused on offering their boss -- and more importantly, their friend and teammate -- the emotional support necessary to return his life to some form of regularity.

"Dale is having a season to remember, and Nationwide is excited to launch our new long-term relationship as a primary sponsor this season as he pursues the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship," said Matt Jauchius, chief marketing officer at Nationwide, in a team release. Stewart returning to competition after fatal crash (The Associated Press)

Driver Tony Stewart reacts during practice for the Brickyard 400 Sprint Cup series auto race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Saturday, July 26, 2014. (AP Photo/AJ Mast)Tony Stewart will return to Sprint Cup competition Sunday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway, ending a three-race hiatus taken after he struck and killed a fellow driver during a dirt-track race. The three-time NASCAR champion has not raced since his car hit Kevin Ward Jr. at an Aug. 9 sprint car event in upstate New York. Stewart pulled out of the NASCAR race at Watkins Glen the next morning, then skipped races at Michigan and Bristol Motor Speedway. Stewart-Haas Racing executive vice president Brett Frood has said the emphasis was on giving Stewart time needed to get him ''in a better place than he is.'' Stewart's only comment since the crash was a statement the day after the crash in which he said ''there aren't words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.'' Ward had climbed from his car after it had spun while racing for position with Stewart.
